EAST LANSING, Mich. -

Michigan State University on Monday issued a crime alert about a gunman sighting on campus, but later said it was a false alarm.

A text message and a voicemail were sent to the campus community around 1 p.m. saying a man with a gun had been seen near Bessey Hall.

Police later followed up by saying the man had a training weapon. An ROTC cadet in plainclothes had been handling his replica rifle in the parking lot outisde the hall before entering the building with the rifle.

"Once it was determined there was no threat to the safety of our community, we launched an Alert message indicating the threat was over," university public safety said in a release.
