Michigan voters support healthy school nutrition standards

8 Out of 10 Voters Want Healthy School Meals

DETROIT – A new survey conducted by the Kids' Safe and Healthful Foods Project revealed that more than 8 out of 10 Michigan voters with children in public school support requiring schools to meet the national nutrition standards for school meals. The vast majority also believe that the food options in schools should include fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains with every meal.

The telephone survey of 700 voters found that almost all of the voters and public school parents believe serving nutritious foods in schools is important in helping ensure that children are prepared to learn and do their best in school. More than 9 in 10 believe it's important for schools to provide nutrition education as part of the curriculum. Almost all of the parents also believe children don't have enough time to eat during the lunch period.
