Driver allegedly fleeing police slams into medical transport SUV

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. – A third person involved in a crash on Woodward Avenue Friday morning in Highland Park has died.

The victims -- two women and a man -- were all in a medical transport SUV that was hit by a minivan driver who was allegedly fleeing police.

The SUV was transporting dialysis patients.

Two of the victims died at the scene. The third died just before noon at the hospital.

The driver of the minivan is in critical condition.

The crash happened at about 3:30 a.m. near Courtland Street.

"Officers observed the vehicle driving erratically traveling southbound on Woodward. Due to the conditions, they went to stop the vehicle, at which time the vehicle continued on. They terminated any kind of following at that point. The vehicle continued on and crossed the center, striking a vehicle traveling northbound," said Highland Park Police Officer Chris Zuellig.

Highland Park Police Chief Kevin Coney said the crash scenes was one of the worst he had seen.

Police are investigating whether the minivan driver had been drinking.

Both directions of Woodward Avenue were closed until 8:15 a.m.
