HIGHLAND PARK – At least two people are dead in a crash that shut down a portion of Woodward Avenue in Highland Park early Friday morning.

An SUV and a van collided at about 3:30 a.m. near Cortland Street.

Police said the silver van was driving erratically and officers tried to pull it over.

"Officers observed the vehicle driving erratically traveling southbound on Woodward. Due to the conditions, they went to stop the vehicle, at which time the vehicle continued on. They terminated any kind of following at that point. The vehicle continued on and crossed the center, striking a vehicle traveling northbound," said Highland Park Police Officer Chris Zuellig.

There were three people in the medical transport SUV, two were killed -- a female driver and a male passenger. Another female passenger is in critical condition.

The SUV has "Lifeline Transport" on the side of it. The SUV had dialysis patients inside.

The lone driver of the van is hospitalized.

Local 4 is not yet releasing the victims' names.

Highland Park Police Chief Kevin Coney said the crash scenes was one of the worst he had seen.

Both directions of Woodward Avenue were closed until 8:15 a.m.
