Canton Township police warn of man they call 'predator'

Police say 34-year-old Walled Lake man communicates with, preys on women through Internet

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Jesse Lee Herman is a 34-year-old Walled Lake man accused of a filthy crime.

Herman is said to have started communicating with a woman over the Internet back in February. He allegedly arranged to meet her and her young daughter at a motel in Canton Township.

At some pointe during the online conversation Herman started to make the woman fell uncomfortable. She turned to police. Police intervened before any inappropriate contact took place.

"It's important that you know who you're talking to. These predators are out there. It's a reality," said Sgt. Michael Steckel, with Canton Township police. "Being able to get that tip and being able to take a predator off the street is huge to us."

It was a big bust for police, but the investigation is far from over.

"We want these parents to come forward and let us know if they've had contact with this guy so that we can investigate further," said Steckel.

Investigators believe there is a good chance there are other victims out there -- women and children preyed upon by Herman.

When it comes to the Internet, Canton Township police urge people, women in particular, to follow this advice:

"It's important that you know who you're talking to, you never meet somebody. If you do, make sure it's in a public place, it's with a friend or two," said Steckle.

Right now, Herman is out of jail on bond.

Anyone who has had contact with him is asked to call Canton Township police at 734-397-3000.
