DETROIT - Turkia Mullin's brother has been federally charged with unlawfully distributing a controlled substance and committing health care fraud.
A 68-count superceding indictment against Dr. Hussein "Sam" Awada, 43, and Dr. Luis Collazo, 53, was unsealed Friday.
The two had previously been charged in December.
Both doctors are charged with allegedly distributing controlled substances outside of their medical practice for no legitimate purpose from December 2010 through 2012.
The charges allege that the drugs Oxycodone, Roxicodone, and Opana ER, all highly addictive substances, were prescribed and and that some were sold to recruiters in exchange for cash payments by Awada after ordering unnecessary medical procedures.
The pills were they sold on the street market, according to the charges.
The superseding indictment also charges that Awada andCollazo committed health care fraud by billing for unnecessary office visits, submitting patients brought by recruiters to medically unnecessary testing and procedures (including x-rays, nuclear cardiac stress tests, electrocardiograms, blood work, and injections) and by causing Medicare and other insurance programs to pay for unnecessary controlled substances.
Both doctors worked at the Midwest Family Practice on 12 Mile Road in Warren, and, according to charges, Collazo also participated in the drug and health care fraud scheme while he worked there.
Collazo will be arraigned on June 21 and Awada will be arraigned on June 24.
More than $600,000 in funds and three automobiles were seized during the course of the underlying investigation.
Mullin: Former Wayne County Airport boss
Mullins was fired three months after her appointment last year to the Wayne County Airport Authority Board after it was revealed she got a $200,000 severance deal when she left her job as Wayne County's economic development director for the CEO position. Mullin later agreed to repay it and gave the county a check for the after-tax amount of $135,900. The FBI is investigating.
