DETROIT – Former Michigan Rep. Brian Banks was sentenced on Friday morning to one day in the Wayne County Jail, time already served, for making false financial statements.
Banks, D-Harper Woods, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of filing false financial statements and resigned on Feb. 6. He was originally charged with four felonies in June.
Officials said that in 2010, before he took office, Banks made an application for a $7,500 loan using pay statements from his alleged employer, IHI Attorneys and Consultants of Farmington. He did not work for IHI.
Since he pleaded guilty and resigned, the previous four charges were dropped. He was charged with two counts of uttering and publishing, one count of false statements as to financial condition and one count of false statements to defraud or cheat.
The misdemeanor charge was punishable by up to a year in jail.
“Former Rep. Banks pleaded guilty, admitting he did indeed commit the crime for which he was sentenced,” said Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette. “I am pleased to see this case come to a close and that the residents of his district have the chance to get an honest, hardworking and law-abiding representative.”
A special election to fill Banks' House seat has been scheduled for August.
