Gravestones found at construction site in Clawson

Clawson police try to crack mysterious case of missing headstones in city without cemeteries

CLAWSON, Mich. – Clawson police are digging into databases to find out how two cemetery headstones may have ended up at a construction site.

The stones are etched, "Dear Husband and Father, William J. Edwards, March 27, 1936- Dec 10, 1986" and "Dear Husband and Father John Kramere, July 19, 1948 – Jan 1, 2001."

"It's different. In my 28 years here, I don't think we've ever found a headstone, " said Clawson Police Chief Harry Anderson.

The markers were found Tuesday partially buried in some debris where construction is wrapping up on a Social Security Administration building at 14 mile and Crooks roads. It is not known how long they were here.

"We've checked records all of our local databases throughout the county and the state and can't seem to find the names and dates of the people," Anderson said.

No cemeteries in Clawson

Police are not literally digging too deep. They do not believe the bodies of Kramere and Edwards became a Jimmy Hoffa with a secret burial or their bodies stolen from a grave. Clawson has no cemeteries.

"No reason for an excavation job," said Anderson.

The markers may also not belong to any dearly departed. They could have been stolen demos. The case has cops between a rock and a hard place.

"We've checked with local cemeteries to see if they have any headstones missing. Nothing is turning up," Anderson said.
