The Macomb County Sheriff's Office said the bus was traveling eastbound on 21 Mile Road near Parklane Court. It was stopped in the roadway to pick up a child when it was rear-ended by a 2009 Ford Escape. The bus had its red flashers activated at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Escape, a 21 year-old Macomb Township man, was trapped in his vehicle due to the extensive damage. He had to be extricated by Macomb Township fire personnel. He was transported to McLaren Macomb Hospital for treatment.

There were 25 students on the bus at the time of the crash. As a safety precaution, the children were removed from the bus while the crash was investigated. The children are students at Atwood Elementary School in Macomb Township.
