Man who was shot, killed outside Woodhaven Walmart store identified

Charles David Brown Jr. killed in parking lot on Allen Road, was on probation for previous troubles

WOODHAVEN, Mich. – The man who was shot and killed Tuesday by Woodhaven police at a Walmart store has been identified.

Charles David Brown Jr., 39, died after the confrontation in the parking lot outside the store on Allen Road just south of West Road.

Officers said Brown and a woman were shopping at the store when an employee and customers allegedly saw the couple trying to pull a shoplifting scam at the self checkout. Police were called and officers confronted the couple.

According to police, Brown first used a screwdriver as a weapon before using his car in an attempt to run down an officer. The officer opened fire in the parking lot, killing Brown. The woman fled but is now in police custody.

"They ordered him to drop the screwdriver. He refused to drop the screwdriver," said Woodhaven Police Chief Gordon Chretien. "And then he jumped in his vehicle ... he put the vehicle in reverse and tried to hit the officer that was standing in front of his car."

According to state records, Brown was on probation at the time of this death. He served time for stealing a car and was discharged in 2011. He was busted for stealing another car in February of this year.

His probation was slated to end in September of 2013.

Woodhaven police, Michigan State Police and Brownstown Township police were all at the store after the shooting.

No officers were injured.
