GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A man has received the mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2005 killing of his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter in western Michigan.

On Aug. 10, a Kent County Circuit Court jury found 27-year-old Pedro Navarro guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Aiyana Cisneros.

Judge James. R. Redford sentenced him Tuesday.

Navarro was arrested earlier this year.

Police say he was the boyfriend of Samantha Winkler, who pleaded guilty in 2005 to second-degree murder in Aiyana' death.

Winkler was sentenced to up to 60 years in prison in the death of Aiyana, who had blunt force injuries to her chest and abdomen.

Police say that newly discovered witnesses and evidence led to the charge against Navarro.
