The Metro Region serves four counties: Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair and Wayne, which accounts for 40 percent of all traffic in Michigan.

"MDOT thanks all motorists for their patience during this past construction season, especially those who were inconvenienced daily by the I-275 bridge reconstruction," said MDOT Engineer Tony Kratofil. "Infrastructure improvements are necessary for enhanced quality of life for our residents and assist in providing a stable economic base for growth and job retention."

During 2012, MDOT invested $124 million for 87 miles of pavement repairs and roughly $55 million to upgrade 67 bridges.

Completed upgrades:

Macomb County:

  • I-94: A $19.5 million investment to resurface more than 5 miles between 23 Mile and County Line roads, including safety upgrades to the eastbound I-94 exit and entrance ramps at 23 Mile Road.

Wayne County:

  • I-94: An $11 million investment to upgrade the bridges over M-39 (Southfield Road).
  • I-75/Dix-Toledo Road interchange: A $25 million investment to modernize the interchange in Brownstown Township.
  • I-275: A $27.7 million investment to repair 34 bridges between Hannan and 6 Mile roads, including resurfacing the freeway between Ecorse and Ford roads.

Oakland County:

  • M-150 (Rochester Road): A $6 million investment to reconstruct M-150 between 2nd Street and the Paint Creek bridge.
  • M-10 (Northwestern Highway): A $3.1 million investment to resurface more than 3 miles between Beck and Orchard Lake road.
  • US-24 Business Route (Cesar Chavez Drive): A $5.2 million investment to reconstruct 1 mile between the Woodward Loop and Montcalm Avenue in Pontiac.

Detroit:

  • I-94: A $7.6 million investment to resurface approximately 5 miles between Wyoming Avenue and 2nd Street, including upgrades to eight overpasses between Warren Avenue and Weir Road.
  • M-102 (Eight Mile Road): An $11 million investment to resurface 2.5 miles between M-5 (Grand River Avenue) and US-24 (Telegraph Road).

MDOT says the M-85 reconstruction project will continue throughout the winter with utility replacement between Pennsylvania and Sibley roads in order to finish the project as quickly as possible. Work will resume next spring to finalize bridge work on I-275 at the Norfolk Southern railroad crossing between Ecorse Road and Michigan Avenue.
