Michigan DNR seeks volunteer outdoor sports instructors

DNR seeks volunteers for Recreation 101 coaching positions

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan's Department of Natural Resources is looking for volunteers who can coach people interested in trying a new outdoor activity.

The DNR last year began a program called Recreation 101. It offers free introductory lessons for newcomers at sports such as hiking, biking, hunting and fishing. They're offered at state parks, recreation areas and boating facilities. This year, the department is adding a program called Fresh Air Fitness.

Recreation programmer Maia Stephens says the initiative encourages people to enjoy the outdoors and become more physically fit.

The DNR is recruiting instructors with a passion for the outdoors and a desire to share their knowledge and skills. Ideal candidates would be proficient at a particular sport, or would work as outfitters, retailers or brand representatives who can provide hands-on sample gear.
