MUSKEGON, Mich. - A West Michigan girl whose face was mauled by a pet raccoon in 2002 when she was three months old will undergo reconstructive facial surgery at Beaumont Children's Hospital.
Charlotte Ponce, now 10, was attacked when her parents left her unattended at their home near Ravenna, about 15 miles east of Muskegon. She lost her nose, an ear and part of her lip in the attack.
According to the family's website, Charlotte spent months in the hospital after the attack.
Charlotte and her brother were later removed from the home and put into foster care.
She was adopted by her great-aunt and great-uncle in 2005 after the state terminated the biological parents' rights.
Charlotte's surgery is scheduled for August. Donation information to help with medical expenses can be found by visiting the family's website.
