DETROIT – A unique opportunity for girls is putting a new twist on the term "Girls Night Out".
The Southfield Police Department is hosting a seminar to inform teenage girls on how to keep themselves safe through awareness and self defense.
"Kids nowadays are not aware of their surroundings," Kelly Buckberry, of the Southfield Police department, said. "A lot of criminals are opportunists, so they'll look for the most vulnerable person to attack."
Police gave Local 4 a few of the tips:
"If an attackers comes at you from the front, what we want to do is what's called the palm heel strike. Lower your body, that's where you get leverage, then strike the attacker's chin sending them back and your main goal is to then get away," Buckberry said.
If someone comes from behind, use your heels to your advantage. "Pick up your foot, stomp as hard as you can on their foot, they will loosen their grip , and you can get away," she said.
Always keep your strong hand free, and keep your keys close.
"When you are are walking to and from your car, carry your keys in your hand, use your keys as a weapon," Buckberry said. "So if an attacker was to come up to you, you can use your keys as a weapon to defend yourself."
Phone can be used as a safety tool, but teenagers often are distracted by them. Don't walk down the street texting or talking on the phone, always be aware of your surroundings.
"Definitely trust your intuition, trust your instincts, odds are if you feel something is not right, it's not," she said.
The seminars are open to teenage girls, female students and their parents only.
Organizers say the presentation may include topics and videos that are not age appropriate for all --young siblings or students will not be allowed in.
The seminar will be held at Southfield High School's auditorium on February 26, at 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and again on March 27, at 6:30 p.m.
There is no cost to attend, but space is limited and pre-registration is required.
