CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Police say the 23-year-old Chesterfield Township man, who forced his ex-girlfriend into a Christmas tree bag, threatened to shoot her and then escaped, has been captured.
Jonathan Elbers was found in a heavily wooded area near I-94 and New Haven Road at 12:45 p.m. Sunday.
Chesterfield Township police say he was found hiding in a deer blind and was taken into custody without incident.
Police have been searching for Elbers since confronting him early Friday morning at his 20-year-old ex-girlfriend's parents' home on Nicolette Drive.
When officers arrived they were greeted by the woman's sister, who let them into the house.
They could hear the victim screaming "help me" from the basement. Officers went to the basement stairway where Elbers appeared bleeding heavily from his head. He refused to comply with officers or listen to their commands.
He struggled with police until he broke free and fled on foot.
According to police, the victim told officers Elbers choked her while forcing her into the bag. However, she then heard the officers calling out her name. Elbers paused. That's when she struck him in the head with a porcelain statue. He tried to flee toward the stairway, where police first confronted him.
The victim says Elbers was upset about the recent break-up and showed up unannounced at the home while her parents were in Florida. She couldn't reason with him before he forced her into the basement where he started to bind her and place her in a Christmas tree bag.
Macomb County prosecutor charges Elbers with intent to murder
Elbers now faces charges from the Macomb County prosecutor including assault with intent to murder, home invasion, unlawful imprisonment and assaulting an officer causing injury.
Police called him a dangerous suspect while they searched for him.
It is anticipate that Elbers will be arraigned on Monday at the 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore.
