WHITMORE LAKE, Mich. - The 2014 Michigan Pond Hockey Classic is happening this weekend at Mac's Marina in Whitmore Lake.
The MPHC is the primary fundraising event for the Michigan Pond Hockey Sports Charities (MPHSC), a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that provides financial assistance for families in need so their children are able to participate in youth athletic programs..
Many school districts are forced to adopt a "pay to participate" fee for school athletic programs. Families that are under a financial hardship can apply for a MPHSC scholarship. The selected families will be given the opportunity to have their child's athletic participation fee be paid or they can use the funds to pay for needed equipment. All proceeds from the Michigan Pond Hockey classic will go directly to this fund that will be dispersed to the scholarship recipients.
There is something very special about playing hockey outdoors. Hockey, in its purest form, is returning to the frozen waters of Whitmore Lake. This event promises 3 days of nonstop 4-on-4 hockey action. The games will take place on manicured 75' x 150' rinks and will be 30 minutes long with no off-sides, no icing calls and no goalies. This tournament is the largest 4-on-4-pond hockey tournament in Lower Michigan and continues to grow.
Players who want to experience this one-of-a-kind event that takes you back to playing on backyard rinks and frozen ponds, are encouraged to act quickly as there are only a few open spots left. Come out to enjoy Pond Hockey with a team of close friends in a spectacular setting with lighted rinks, spirited competition, and the atmosphere of a festival!
The competition starts on Friday night with an opening ceremony and closing with the semi-finals and finals on Sunday afternoon. The weekend will be packed with non-stop fun for all, with fireworks, heated entertainment tents, live bands, concessions, raffles, family activities and a skills competition for all ages on Saturday.
