'Sparkle' movie premieres in Royal Oak

Whitney Houston remembered on the big screen in the movie's release, filmed in Detroit

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – "Sparkle" premiered at midnight Friday with a special premiere in Royal Oak. 

The movie, filmed in Detroit, was Whitney Houston's pet project. She acquired the re-make rights in 2000 and was also a producer of the film.

Houston stars in the film along with Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter.

"Sparkle," set in the 1960s is about three sisters who form a girl group and soon become Motown sensations, but fame becomes a challenge as the close-knit family begins to fall apart.
