Superior Township man arrested for breaking into cars in Ypsilanti

Police: Willie Collins, 22, assaulted a witness who tried to stop a break-in

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Police have a Superior Township man in custody after a caller reported seeing him break into a vehicle in Ypsilanti.

Police say they received a call from a resident on Chestnut Drive who said a man was trying to break into a car in the neighborhood.

The caller told police that he had tried to stop the suspect but was assaulted by the man.

Police arrived and detained 22-year-old Willie Collins after the caller provided a detailed description of the suspect.

Police say Collins had numerous stolen items on his person -- including , sunglasses, a GPS, bracelet, MP3 player and stolen credit cards.

Collins admitted to police that he took the items from an unlocked car.

Police say Collins was on parole for unarmed robbery and the new arrest violates his parole.  

Collins was charged with robbery and resisting arrest among other charges.
