Firefighters transported to Detroit Receiving hospital after falling through roof at fire

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – Three firefighters were hurt injured after battling a fire Friday morning on the 3000 block of Edwin in Hamtramck, according to authorities.

SLIDESHOW: Falling through roof: 3 fire fighters hurt battling fire

The Hamtramck fire started about 9:30 a.m. Friday.  The Hamtramck Fire Department says nobody was inside the two-story home when firemen were on the second floor attic.

"It was just burning. I woke up and it was burning," said neighbor Michael Stone.

The first fireman fell down from the stairs.  Afterward, the second fireman went down from the roof and into the second floor.  The third fell from the attic as well.

"As we got to the back of the house we found it was fully involved in the second floor, the attic and the roof," said Hamtramck Fire Cpt. Chris Sanchez.

The firemen are expected to be OK, suffering from ankle, back and hip injuries. The Fire Department says they were transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

"You have to commend these guys. To fight a house fire, especially a two-story structure, with just four of us, that's asking a lot," Sanchez said. "I'm hoping in time that the city will look at this and see that this really is an insufficient amount of guys to be fighting a house fire."
