WAYNE COUNTY – The Detroit-Wayne County Community Mental Health Agency (D-WCCMHA) and its board members reached out to express their deep sorrow in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy Thursday.
"We are hopeful that the following resources will be helpful to parents, educators, mental health professionals and paraprofessionals who may be searching for information to help people cope with this enormous loss", said Sandra Peppers, Acting Chief Operating Officer.

Asperger's Disorder has been in the headlines a lot recently. It has been alleged that it may have been a contributing factor as the shooter may have suffered from this disorder. The D-WCCMHA is here with a wide array of services and programs available to offer support; clarification and counseling to those that may be in need of some assistance.
Children with autism are frequently seen as aloof and uninterested in others. This is not the case with Asperger's Disorder. Individuals with Asperger's Disorder usually want to fit in and have interaction with others; they simply don't know how to do it. They may be socially awkward, not understanding of conventional social rules, or show a lack of empathy. They may have limited eye contact, seem to be unengaged in a conversation, and not understand the use of gestures.
"There really is no evidence that links autism or Asperger's to violence," according to Carlynn Nichols, LMSW, and Director of Children's Initiatives at D-WCCMHA.
