Ypsilanti Township man charged with infant's murder

19-year-old father accused of beating 5-month-old daughter

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 19-year-old Ypsilanti Township father has been charged with child abuse 1st degree and felony murder after the death of his 5-month-old daughter.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office says Devontah Lee Nelson was alone with the infant and an 18-month-old child, which he also is father to, when deputies were dispatched Wednesday evening to the home in the 2300 block of East Ellsworth. They were responding to the report of an unresponsive infant.

Medical personnel were aiding the child who was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Doctors treated her at the hospital but she died due to her extensive injuries including a fractured skull, lacerated liver, retinal hemorrhages and fractured ribs.

The Sheriff's Office says Nelson is responsible for the child's injuries.

He was arraigned Friday on the charges. He was given no bond and is being held at the Washtenaw County Jail.
