Mistress in Bashara murder case takes stand, power goes out

DETROIT – Just minutes after Bob Bashara's mistress began testifying Wednesday for his preliminary exam on a murder charge connected to his wife's death, the building's power went out.

Rachel Gillett was speaking on her intimate relationship with the Grosse Pointe Park man when the room at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice went dark. It was evacuated.

She had been in the middle of explaining how she met Bashara at "the dungeon," which was in the basement of a building off Mack Avenue.

Gillett's brief testimony came just hours after Bashara's daughter testified that she had caught her father looking at pornography and lying about an affair.

There were multiple times, Jessica said, that she and her mother had confronted Bob about his pornography habit -- adding that he visited alt.com.

She said her father told her and her mother he had stopped, but she continued to find evidence of it -- including a racy text message that said, "Get on your knees and give me h***, b****."

Jessica said her father denied the text message existed.

Hearing under way to determine if Bob Bashara will stand trial for murder

The preliminary hearing to decide if there's enough evidence to try Robert Bashara for first-degree murder began Monday afternoon.

Jane Bashara's body was found Jan 24, 2012, in her Mercedes-Benz in a Detroit alley, a few miles from the couple's home in Grosse Pointe Park. Joseph Gentz has pleaded guilty to strangling her, saying he did so at her husband's behest.

Bashara already is serving up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to trying to hire someone to kill Gentz in jail. He's denied involvement in his wife's death.
