Mother of 6-year-old shooting victim speaks out

DETROIT –  The six-year-old boy who was shot while inside of his house on Detroit's west side was released from the hospital and is trying to return to a normal life though the person who shot him has not been caught.

The mother of the boy, whose identity WDIV concealed, said on Sunday evening after dinner, someone fired shots into her house from the outside.

"The bullets were just ripping through the house. I didn't know what was going on. I just saw blood, that's all I could think about was I was really afraid of them [paramedics] not being able to help him," the mother said.

The six-year-old boy was shot in the chest, hand, and legs and spent five days in the hospital. He underwent two surgeries and skin grafts and is wheelchair bound for at least a month as he continues to heal from his wounds.

"He can't forget this and it hurts the most watching him go through the process, pain, not being able to move around much because they gave him a wheelchair," the mother said.

Though the boy is struggling with the fact that he was shot, his spirit is still rich with a strong love for Batman. When he left the hospital with his mother, he told her that he now wants to become a police officer.

"Police officers help people and the bad people do bad things and that's why they take them to jail and then people will all be safe in the city," said the little boy.

Police originally arrested a 43-year-old man who was the ex-husband of a woman who was at the house at the time of the shooting. The man has since been released from custody and the mother said she is trying to stay positive, but is fearful because the person who did this is still out there.

"It's unacceptable, unacceptable, and I hope at the end of the day, you [the person who shot her son] suffer for your demons. I hope you're thinking about what you did and I hope at the end of the day, you get caught if not turning yourself in because you hurt a child, he doesn't know you, he doesn't understand why this happened, he didn't deserve it," the mother said.

The mother and son have not returned to the house where the shooting took place and are trying to afford a new place to live.
