Mother Of Baby Left In Van Facing Charge

Sterling Heights Police Say Mother Tells Them She Forgot About Baby

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Sterling Heights police said the mother of a 8-month-old baby boy has been charged with leaving her son alone in a van for 20 minutes.

Police said a shopper noticed the baby inside the van on Aug. 6 with the windows rolled up as she went inside the Kroger Store at Schoenherr and Canal roads, and called them after seeing the baby still inside when she came out of the store 25 minutes later.

Police said officers removed the baby from the van and took him to Henry Ford Macomb Medical Center because he was sweating heavily and lethargic. They said he was going to be OK.

The baby's 27-year-old mother, Susan Scott, returned to the van while officers were still on the scene and told them she had forgotten about the baby, police said.

The baby is back with the family but the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office has issued a warrant for the mother. Scott is charged with one count of leaving a child unattended in a vehicle. The misdemeanor is punishable with up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.
