Mother's Day shopping heats up Saturday

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Mother's Day is less than 24 hours away, but for many metro Detroiters, the preparation has just begun.

Saturday morning was a beautiful time to do some Mother's Day shopping at Eastern Market. But with the holiday looming, the pressure to find the right gift is on.

"She is the most important," said Andrew Valenti. "She brought me here."

A Mother's Day gift is not complete without a card. Darren Findling, a husband and father of four, is looking for that special card for his special lady.

"The one that expressed my deep appreciation and love for her," he said. "It's never easy because you want to find the right one."

Local 4's Will Jones stopped by the Walgreens on Woodward Avenue and Coolidge Highway in Royal Oak to meet with some of the last-minute shoppers who are trying to make sure their mom enjoys her day.

"Her name is Joyce," said Brian Luska. "She means the world to me. She is a very special person and I love her dearly."

According to the Nation Retail Federation, American will spend an average of $173 this year, an increase of about $10 from 2014. That's the highest amount in the survey's 12-year history.

In the end, some say it's not what you buy, but the thought, that counts.

"I'll probably make something nice," Valenti said. "Making something is more important than buying something, in my opinion."
