Motion for restraining order to stop Pistons' move to Downtown Detroit denied

Restraining order requested to block funding for arena, new Pistons headquarters

DETROIT – A motion for a temporary restraining order to stop the Pistons' move to Downtown Detroit has been denied, a court document revealed.

A hearing was held Monday on a request for a temporary restraining order to block funding for the new Little Caesars Arena and Pistons headquarters.

Robert Davis and D. Etta Wilcox wanted the federal district court to stop the Detroit City Council from issuing $34.5 million in additional DDA bonds to pay for construction changes to the Little Caesars Arena project to accommodate the Pistons' move downtown.

They argued that the city is required to get voter approval to use property tax revenue from millages for Detroit Public Schools.

The Detroit Pistons said the NBA won't approve their move to Detroit unless the issues are resolved, and without league approval, the move to Detroit can't happen.

"The loss of the Pistons would cost Detroit millions of dollars in tax revenue and would threaten the burgeoning growth of the city's entertainment district," city lawyers and the DDA said in their court filing.
