Lt. Michael Shaw said police were trailing a group of men overnight in Detroit who were suspected of impersonating officers to commit a string of armed robberies when the suspects bailed out of a car in the 5300 block of Townsend Street.
"Troopers went in pursuit, performed a perimeter around the house with a canine unit. The Detroit Police Department helped with a sweep of the neighborhood to see if they could help catch the individuals. It was during that time that the troopers and members of the DPD were fired upon," Shaw said.
The trooper was hit below his knee. A Detroit police officer was also grazed on his left side.
"This could have been a heck of a lot worse if it wasn't for the troopers and the DPD officers out there relying on their training," Shaw said.

Two people were immediately taken into custody. Police stayed on the scene for several hours -- using teargas brought in by a SWAT team -- to clear out the house and make sure no one else was inside.
They said they were looking for two more people connected to the incident.
