MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. - – All Mount Clemens Community Schools closed Tuesday as a health precaution after two staffers were diagnosed with MRSA.
MRSA is a type of staph infection that is resistant to certain antibiotics, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website. Most MRSA infections are skin infections, the website states.
"We chose to take a proactive approach," Superintendent Debra Wahlstrom told Local 4 News. "I would love for parents to know that we have a great team. Our own team here is working behind the scene to wipe down everything, to get everything sanitized and disinfected for kids."
She said the district consulted with the Centers for Disease Control and the Macomb County Health Department before making the decision to close schools.
Wahlstrom said schools are expected to be back open on Wednesday.
"It's great news to hear this morning that they're on top of it and that nobody else can get sick or contaminated," said Joe Noble a parent in the district.
Last week, a teacher within the district was diagnosed with MRSA and a paraprofessional is sick with the same symptoms.
All schools in the district will be sanitized and disinfected.
The buses will also be cleaned, too, because one of the sick staff members had been on a field trip.
"Now that it's here in the middle school and the high school, kids can get very sick from this," said Sheila who has a child that attends Mt. Clemens schools.
The district posted the closure announcement on its website.
When students and staff return on Wednesday they will receive additional information on how to prevent MRSA.
