Nation of Islam brings back convention to Detroit

Convention features workshops, spiritual renewal, fellowship & more

DETROIT – The Nation of Islam is returning to the place it started for its annual four-day convention.

The Chicago-based movement on Thursday will kick off Saviours' Day in Detroit at Cobo Center, the event's main convention site. Organizers say it will feature workshops, spiritual renewal, fellowship and networking.

Saviours' Day commemorates the founding in Detroit of the Nation of Islam, which has espoused black nationalism and self-reliance since the 1930s. It was last held in Detroit in 2007.

Nation of Islam's leader, Minister Louis Farrakhan, will deliver the keynote speech Sunday afternoon at the nearby Joe Louis Arena. The title is "How Strong is Our Foundation: Can We Survive?"

The conference typically draws thousands of people from around the globe.
