MSP trooper recovering after crash with suspected drunken driver

29-year-old driver in custody

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – A Michigan State Police trooper is expected to be OK after her patrol car was rear-ended by a suspected OWI driver early Friday morning.

MSP troopers were working around 3 a.m. with MDOT crews to block the right lane of northbound I-75 to make sure workers weren't hit by drivers in a construction zone.

"For this particular case, there were two troopers out there, so this (driver) actually missed the first car that was sitting there, went around the first car and struck the rear end of this SUV," said MSP Lt. Mike Shaw. "Fortunately enough for us, the guy decided to hit one of SUVs instead of one of our Chargers. It could have been a lot worse."

Trooper Jacalyn Raab's was hospitalized with a broken wrist and some neck and back pain. She is a 29-year veteran of the Metro North Post.

The accused drunken driver is in police custody at the Oakland County Jail and is expected to face charges. Sources told Local 4 that the driver is a 29-year-old man from Macomb County.

The northbound lanes of I-75 were closed Friday morning at Joslyn Road in Auburn Hills after the crash. All northbound lanes have reopened.
