Neighbors voice concerns over Detroit Velo Project

DETROIT – The Detroit Velo Project wants to build a velodrome for track cycling at a site just east of the city's downtown. But neighbors in the area of Gratiot Avenue and St. Aubin aren't sure it's the right fit for the community.

Track cycling is an Olympic sport that has an international following. Residents in the surrounding Elmwood and Lafayette Park neighborhoods are concerned the 500-seat velodrome it would impose on their parking and create traffic hazards -- they also have issue with allowing the velodrome a liquor license.

"That don't excite me," said resident Deborah Gentry.

Gentry and others who live in the area want to see the land --which is where the Joe Muer's seafood restaurant once stood -- developed, but cycling doesn't appeal to them.

"They are going to be right next to the senior citizens. I don't think that is going to be good," said Regina Harris.

A community meeting is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Elmwood Park United Church of Christ, 2001 St Aubin.
