FERNDALE, Mich. – The Downtown Development Authority in Ferndale is proud of what has happened during the past year. Local businesses have created new office spaces, over 30 new businesses and 300 new jobs. Local 4's Lauren Podell checked in on some of the flourishing businesses in Ferndale on Friday.
TV Fitness, a personal training gym that has only been open for two years, is busy with members and teamed up with a company called Organico.
"I can't tell you how many times clients have come in and said 'We love that you're here, we've been looking for something like this in Ferndale,'" said Scott McDougall of Organico. "You hope to hear that when you're a new business."
When the Downtown Development Authorities said the businesses are investing in their city, they meant it. Companies like Inspiration Uncorked, which specializes in art parties, just opened in Ferndale. In the same plaza, Logo Copy Center and Pet-n-Paw Boutique opened in the past year.
"When I decided that I had outgrown my home office, where did I want to look, I knew I had to keep the business in Ferndale," said Kristen Schmitt of Pet-n-Paw Boutique. "So we have Pet-n-Paw here on Woodward; all organic, wholistic, all the foods made in the U.S."
Whether her employees are selling products or walking dogs, Schmitt has put 11 people to work in Ferndale.
