DETROIT – There's a new effort to help connect the millions of Americans who suffer from Alzheimer's disease with the researchers hoping to find a cure for the devastating disease.
It's called the Alzheimer's Prevention Registry. People who join the registry will receive updates on the latest information involving Alzheimer's disease and be given the opportunity to participate in clinical trials.

"Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the only one in the top ten without a known effective treatment or cure," said researcher Dr. Jessica Langbaum. "Researchers have made tremendous progress in better understanding the disease. We now know it starts years before they ever experience that first sign or symptom. By harnessing this information, researchers are starting new types of prevention trials that are targeting those silent years."
Researchers are also interested in learning how healthy lifestyle changes can affect the risk and progression of Alzheimer's disease.
The registry hopes to enroll people currently suffering from Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers, as well as healthy people who are interested in Alzheimer's prevention.
"We want people to know that there is hope," said Langbaum.
