New synthetic drug making the rounds called smiles

2 C-I, smiles is the new synthetic drug on the streets

A new drug is out on the streets and it is becoming a hit with teens.

The drug is called smiles or 2 C-I.

Teens think they are getting a so-called, "safe high" when they take the drug.

"The one that we've seen is something called 2C-I," said James Mowry from the Indiana Poison Control.
2 C-I is a powerful, synthetic psychedelic drug manufactured for one reason.

"They are trying to go for that safe high and there is probably no such thing as a safe high," Mowry said.

Mowry says the side effects of the drug have him on edge.

Smiles has been know to cause seizures, kidney failure and in a few cases raised blood pressure and body temperatures to fatal levels.

"They do something that is called uncoupling. Basically, their muscles get to the point they can not uncontract, so they sort of get rigid and then your temperature goes up really high. And, if you don't treat them really aggressively, those people usually end up dying," He said.

This is the effect that users are usually after when they take a synthetic drug.

It is most commonly found in pill form, but there are reports of users injecting it.

The psychedelic effects are also reported to be more powerful than its natural occurring counterparts.

Experts say the drug effects can last a few hours or days.

Because smiles is a synthetic hallucinogen like K-2, it should be illegal under Michigan laws.

Local-4 contacted police who say they are researching the issue now.

Police say they will be prepared to aggressively enforce the laws if and when smiles shows up in Michigan.
