Grandparents send out message to fleeing driver in fatal crash

Deadly crash claims 2 lives, injures 5 others on US 23 near Textile Road in Pittsfield Township; state police seek 2nd vehicle

PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. The grandparents of the children killed in a crash Friday afternoon have sent out a message to the fleeing driver that police say caused the accident.  Two siblings were killed in a crash Friday afternoon on the southbound side of US Highway 23 near Textile Road in Pittsfield Township.

The victims were in a 1999 Ford Expedition, driven by Dawn Siegel, traveling south on US 23 when it was cut off, police say, by another vehicle traveling southbound described as a silver or gray Honda Odyssey minivan with paper plates.

Police are asking anyone with information on the vehicle or the crash to contact the Michigan State Police Brighton Post at 810-227-1051.

Police say Siegel attempted to avoid the vehicle by swerving into the median. She lost control of the SUV and it rolled several times.

Seven people in the SUV were either killed or injured, including Dawn Siegel, her four children and two step children.

Jordan Siegel, 14, and Ashley Siegel, 12, were killed. They were pronounced dead at the crash scene. A 16 month old baby girl survived unhurt. The other children were taken to Ann Arbor hospitals and two were released on Saturday. Dawn's condition is improving and she is in stable condition and may be released on Sunday, according to her mother talking to Local 4. She also says the last remaining daughter, Madison Owens is scheduled for more surgery on Sunday. She has several cuts and some internal injuries.

The Siegel family is from Novi.

Witnesses tell police the minivan driver may be an Arabic woman about 40 years old. The minivan had continued southbound on US 23 after the crash.
