SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -

Southfield police chase 2 Southfield police said officers were chasing a carjacking suspect Monday afternoon when the suspect crashed at Telegraph Road and Civic Center.

Police said an officer witnessed the carjacking at Telegraph and 10 Mile roads. The suspect, a 26-year-old Detroit man, was armed with a handgun. The carjacking victim is an 83-year-old Southfield man.

Police officers intentionally struck the vehicle during the pursuit to bring it to a stop at Telegraph Road and Denson Drive.

"They tried to stop him with their lights and sirens activated. The vehicle fled and there was a short pursuit and our officers used intentional contact to stop the vehicle," said Southfield police Lt. Nick Loussia.

Officers shot the suspect in the shoulder when he attempted to flee on foot after the crash. He was arrested.

Police said no one else was injured in the carjacking and no officers were injured in the crash.

Southbound Telegraph Road was closed as police investigated the crash.

The suspect was treated for injuries at the crash scene but then taken to a hospital. Police sources say medical staff at the hospital found another bullet still lodged in the suspect's body from a previous shooting incident.
