Competency exams ordered for Michigan roadway shootings suspect

Judges in two Michigan counties have ordered a man charged in a shooting spree that targeted motorists to undergo forensic competency and criminal responsibility examinations.

District court judges in Novi and Howell ordered the exams during hearings Wednesday in cases against Raulie Casteel.

The 43-year-old unemployed geologist is charged with 60 counts, including multiple counts of assault with intent to murder, in connection with shootings in Wixom and Oakland County's Commerce Township.

He's also charged with six counts in a single case in Livingston County.

Defense attorneys say he's a married, college-educated man with no criminal history.

The shootings began Oct. 16 and stretched from Oakland County west to Ingham County. The targets mostly were cars traveling on roads near Interstate 96. Only a handful of shootings actually occurred on the interstate. In all, 24 shootings were reported to police.

Casteel first was charged for an Oct. 18 shooting on Interstate 96 in Howell. He most recently was charged with intent to murder, among other charges, in connection to shootings in Oakland County.

Police had said they were looking for a man in his late 20s or early 30s driving a dark car. They put out a sketch of him.

Police were urging people to stick to their routines, but the shootings caused some anxious drivers to avoid their usual routes. Authorities said they received 2,800 tips in their hunt for the gunman and a $102,000 reward was being offered for information.
