A former medical resident has been convicted of sexually assaulting and critically injuring his girlfriend's 13-month-old daughter.

The Macomb Daily said a jury deliberated about three hours Thursday before convicting 33-year-old David Montaldi on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and first-degree child abuse.

Montaldi faces a mandatory minimum term of 25 years in prison because the victim was under 13.

A jury was unable to reach a verdict in the case earlier this year.

Officials said Montaldi called his girlfriend in December 2010 to tell her that the baby had had an accident and that his 150 pound dog had injured the little girl.

He later changed his story and claimed that he slipped and dropped the girl.

Montaldi formerly worked at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center.

He will be sentenced Aug. 28th in Macomb County Circuit Court.
