GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich. -

Neighbors describe Donny DeWulf as a friendly guy who always kept to himself.

They say the 54-year-old insurance salesman seemed lonely and didn't have many visitors at his Grosse Pointe Woods home where he had lived for the past 15 years.

"No words can describe how sad we feel knowing somebody and then realizing something so horrible happened to him," said neighbor Helene Mary.

DeWulf's brother found his body Monday morning on the bathroom floor with a piece of electrical wiring nearby and a hole in the ceiling drywall. DeWulf had an apparent gunshot wound to his head. However, the initial call to the morgue was a suicide. After spending nearly 10 hours at the house, Grosse Pointe Woods police detectives ruled it a homicide.

Neighbors reported seeing DeWulf's girlfriend at the house earlier in the same day. However, police will not confirm those claims.

Did the killer force his or her way into the house or was it someone DeWulf knew who had a key?

"It's frightening to know that something like this happened. It does happen. You have to keep your guard up," said neighbor Sarah Irene Mary.

No murder weapon has been found.

Grosse Pointe Woods police have asked for assistance from Michigan State Police and Detroit police homicide investigators. They are working to figure out if this was a random attack or someone who knew DeWulf.

A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday.
