Holocaust Memorial Center to honor Swedish diplomat

Special exhibit honoring Raoul Wallenberg

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -

The Holocaust Memorial Center is honoring a Swedish diplomat who helps save tens of thousands of Jews.

The center in Farmington Hills is presenting a special exhibit and full week of programs for Raoul Wallenberg.

While serving as Sweden's special envoy in Budapest between July and December 1944, Wallenberg issued protective passports and sheltered Jews in buildings designated as Swedish territory. In 1945, during the Siege of Budapest by the Red Army, he was detained by Soviet authorities on suspicion of espionage and subsequently disappeared.

The programs are celebrating 100 years since Wallenberg's birth.
