Man shoots back at men who broke into his Lincoln Park house

69-year-old Lincoln Park man shoots at men who broke into home, stole his gun, shot at him 1st

LINCOLN PARK, Mich. – John Cunningham, 69, was in the basement of his Lincoln Park home Wednesday morning working on his computer when he heard a crash upstairs.

He walked up and shouted "who is there?" Then the shooting started.

Two young men, 18 and 21 years old, had broken into the home and were stealing everything they could get their hands on, including the gun Cunningham keeps by his bed. When he approached the first floor the 18-year-old took the gun by the bed and started shooting at Cunningham. What that thief didn't count on was the gun Cunningham had in the basement.

The senior citizen pulled out the gun and fired back. It scared both intruders away. One jumped out a window and the other dived head-first through the glass of another window.

The 18-year-old was cut badly when he jumped through the glass window. Police said he has been shot at before, and hit, at least three times.

Both intruders tried to run but Lincoln Park police got to the home and arrested both. Police found them with the stolen gun.

Luckily, in the midst of all the shooting, no one was hit. Cunningham, who served in Vietnam and has been around firearms his whole life, is glad, too.

"Don't really want to shoot nobody, but I don't want nobody trashing my house and threatening my life," he said.

-- Bullet holes are all over Cunningham's home.
