Oakland County officials want retailers' pledge to stop K2 sales

Top elected officials in Oakland County are asking gas stations, convenience stores and other retailers to cease the sale of synthetic marijuana, including Spice and K2.

Executive L. Brooks Patterson and Sheriff Michael Bouchard says participants will get window decals to show "their store as a place for customers to shop safe" from the substances.

"Mike and I think this is a good way to get it out of our community. If we can get it out of our community, then Macomb and Wayne and all the other counties are gonna say, 'We don't want to be the lonely store in town' and we suppose they would follow a similar program to get it out of their stores," Patterson said.

Officials say synthetic marijuana is sold as incense or potpourri and is a mixture of herbs and spices. Some are sold as Spice Gold, Spice Silver, Spice Diamond, Fire & Ice, Yucatan Fire, Genie, Pep Spice and Blue Lotus.

"They (business who sell K2) know exactly what they are doing because they are making a ton of money. On some of the packages it's $3 to put together and they are selling it for $30," Bouchard said.

The state House approved bills two years ago aimed at cracking down on K2.

West Bloomfield leaders seek K2 ban

Members of the West Bloomfield Township board will be putting an emergency ordinance up for a vote next week.

If passed, the ordinance would ban the sale of K2 in the township. Those who violate it would be slapped with months in jail and a $500 fine.
