ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University was conducting a test of its emergency alert system Tuesday when it mistakenly reported a shooting on campus.
The university issued a text message about 1 p.m. to students and staff to test its emergency notification system. There was no reason to panic. Then, a few minutes later, an alarming voicemail was sent out.
The voicemail informed recipients that shots were fired on the campus and Oakland University police had placed the campus on lockdown. The message hit social media and spread fast.
Minutes later, OU issued another text message saying there was a mistake. The voicemail alert was incorrect. It was only a test.
Students Local 4 spoke with on Tuesday say the error did not appear to disrupt campus life.
The university apologized for any confusion and is working to make sure this does not happen again.
The error did not cause chaos on the campus. However, there was a lot of confusion. The university said they acted fast to correct the mistake by sending out more texts and emails.
