A 19-year-old Detroit man has been shot during the attempted carjacking of an off-duty police officer.

Police say the 41-year-old officer was getting out of his car about 11:50 p.m. Monday on the city's northwest side when a sport utility vehicle with three people inside blocked his path.

A man got out of the SUV and demanded the officer's car keys. The officer pulled a gun and fired at the man, who fled. The occupants of the SUV also drove off.

About 40 minutes later, the 19-year-old sought treatment at a local hospital for gunshot wound. He was listed in critical condition.

The off-duty officer is a 13-year Detroit police veteran.
