DETROIT -

A 67-year-old pastor and Vietnam veteran is recovering after being shot while fighting back against a group of teens who were trying to rob him outside his Detroit home.

Police said Benjamin Hoke was sitting on his porch Friday night on Heyden Street when three teens confronted him.

Chris Adkins lives across the street and said he saw the whole thing.

"Three little boys just came creeping around the corner, walked up with a gun in his face and the pastor looked at them … didn’t grab the gun,” Adkins said. “I called my brother to come outside or whatever while running across the street and they were fighting and tussling in the grass.”

Adkins said that’s when he heard shots.

Hoke was struck in the side and arm.

“He was in pain but he kept saying, ‘Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,’ as we were tightening up the wounds and stuff. I saw him bleeding a lot more and a lot more,” Adkins said. “There was blood all over me but I was just worried about helping him out.”

Adkins said the teens continued to fire shots as they ran away down the street.

Police said Hoke is expected to be OK.

He is the pastor at Word of Power church in Highland Park.
