DETROIT -

Detroit police say a 3-year-old girl is dead and several other people are hurt after a car that was reportedly speeding crashed into a parked vehicle.

The crash happened Sunday on the city’s west side, near Wildemere and Thatcher streets.

Police said the 21-year-old driver of a Chrysler Sebring was going well above the speed limit through a neighborhood when he lost control and slammed into the parked car, also hitting a tree.

Inside the car with him were five others.

The 3-year-old, Samyrah Leonard, was killed.

A 9-month-old boy and a 11-year-old boy are in critical condition.

A 14-year-old girl, a 19-year-old woman and the driver were also seriously hurt.

Police said it doesn’t appear most of the children were wearing seat belts or were in car seats.

Police said alcohol and drugs are not considered factors in the crash, but speed is.

Police said the driver had only been licensed for about a month before the crash.

Britney Cross owns the parked car that was hit.

She said she was at church when the crash happened and is sending up prayers for the family who has lost their little girl.

“I’m blessed that I wasn’t in the car or family members weren’t in the car. It’s just a vehicle that can be replaced,” Cross said.

Minister Mary Edwards was one of many who have been trying to comfort the family.

"I stopped because I want to see if there was something I can do to bring comfort to the family," Edwards said.

It's not clear yet if the driver will be charged.
