Rapist identified through DNA
40-year-old Ypsilanti Township resident arrested in connection with March attack
Ypsilanti police say they have arrested a 40-year-old Ypsilanti Township man in connection with a rape that happened in March 2009.
The attack happened March 29, 2009 in the 80 block of S. Harris. That's where they found a woman who'd been raped and strangled. The victim told police she was grabbed by the hair by the suspect and dragged into a wooded area where she was sexually assaulted. She also told investigators the suspect took a knife and attempted to slash her throat but she was able to get her hands up and block it.
Police were unable to locate the suspect on the night of the incident. Several items were taken from the crime scene and preserved as evidence. Some items were sent to the MSP lab for possible DNA analysis. Over the course of the next couple years several items came back with a DNA match to Anthony Derrick Chandler. With this, and extensive follow up, warrants were issued for Chandler for Criminal Sexual Conduct 1st degree, Assault with intent to murder, Assault with intent to do great bodily harm and Felonious Assault. On 8/2/12, Chandler was arrested on the warrants and has been in jail ever since on a $150,000 cash bond.
