Suspect in Michigan shooting spree facing charges of intent to commit murder

A man accused of an October shooting spree that targeted motorists in southeastern Michigan now faces 60 felony charges in Oakland County.

Raulie Casteel appeared via video from jail for his arraignment Friday in a Novi court.

Before the arraignment, Judge Dennis Powers signed a warrant that included counts for assault with intent to commit murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle and carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intend.

He pleaded not guilty.

He was denied bond on several counts.

If convicted, Casteel could face up to life in prison.

Wixom police Sgt. Ronald Moore told the judge Friday that shell casings were recovered near the windshield wiper of the suspect's 2009 Chevy Malibu.

Moore said the bullet fragments matched Casteel's 9mm handgun and the fragments lodged in victims' vehicles.

Casteel already is in jail on a $2 million bond in a shooting in Livingston County.

Casteel, a 43-year-old geologist, was arrested Monday at a home in Wixom where he was living with his wife, daughter and in-laws. He returned to his home state last summer after living in Taylorsville, Ky.

The judge said a competency hearing to see if Casteel is fit for trial may become an issue at a later date.

There were two dozen shootings in four counties on or near Interstate 96 in October. One person was injured.
