Teen girl shot while mourning friend leads family looking to flee Detroit

15-year-old's mother says she was injured in the neck and chest

DETROIT – A frightened mother is speaking out after gang warfare sends her and her family fleeing Detroit for good.

Detroit Police are still investigating the fatal shooting, but at least one family is now waiting for the outcome.

A woman, who we'll identify as Ramona, says her 15-year-old daughter was injured in the neck and chest at the corner of Lansing and Toledo in Southwest Detroit.

Ramona's daughter was shot with buckshot while mourning the death of a friend the day before.

"The shooting happened while police was there. That's how bad it is," says Ramona. "You know what I'm saying? That don't make no sense."

Romona moved into Southwest Detroit for the schools, sending her daughter to Western International High School.

In the school and neighborhood, however, is a long established gang called the Latin Counts.  Police say the gang has also recently been feuding with another called the Surenos.

Police believe this gang violence is what led to 15-year-old Michael Reynolds' shooting overnight Friday night.

A silver Honda drove by while he sat on his front porch and was shot and died here.

This makeshift memorial went up and as friends and family gathered on Saturday, another car came by and fired a shotgun into the crowd, injuring Ramona's daughter in the neck and chest.

"It could have been a lot worse the doctor said.  She was very lucky," says Romona. "She was blessed, nothing but God. God gave her a second chance."

It's that kind of heartless violence that so often happens in Detroit these days that has her looking elsewhere for housing.

"I just want to move and I need help moving," says Ramona. "My daughter don't want to walk down the street."

Detroit Police say they are investigating all of these shootings and the deaths, but they don't have much to go on with at this point.  The relationship between the police and the residents is rocky and the biggest worry is gang retaliation.
